A Place of Practice

Weekly wisdom to level up your creative life in 3 minutes, for free.

Happy Wednesday!

Here’s a short story, a creative tool, and a piece of art to inspire you this week.

A SHORT STORY

Patrick Page Studio, 2024

Nine years ago, I co-founded an acting studio alongside my dear friend and mentor, Patrick Page.

Since that time, we have trained hundreds of actors and recently finished our Fundamentals of Acting Course this past week.

Having this studio in my life has reminded me how important it is in one’s creative work to have a place of practice—a space where certain inner possibilities can emerge through a connection with another human being, or even a blank page.

In that space, if we pay attention to the quality of the way we see, a flow can begin to appear. You can even notice this in your daily life, in a deep conversation, for instance.

This connection gives you a sense of freedom, and you begin to breathe differently. You can start to give space to your impulses and the flow inside of you. By focusing your attention entirely outside of you, you let go of any control.

One can also perceive this connection as the sensation of being seen.

It takes a lot of courage to practice this, to face this unknown. But through my own creative work (whether it is acting, building a business, or writing), I have come to discover how necessary it is to have the space and practice for this to arise.

Funnily enough, we founded the Patrick Page Studio as a place where artists could feel seen, but in doing so, those artists gave me the greatest gift of all—they made me feel seen, too.

Where is your place of practice? What conditions are necessary to give the necessary space for possibility to emerge in this space? How can you prioritize that space this week?

A PIECE OF ART

“Somewhere to the East There’s a Church” by Rainer Maria Rilke

Sometimes a man rises from the supper table
and goes outside. And he keeps on going
because somewhere to the east there’s a church.
His children bless his name as if he were dead.

Another man stays at home until he dies,
stays with plates and glasses.
So then it is his children who go out
into the world, seeking the church that he forgot.
